What Each Session Status Means
Every session on your schedule carries a status, shown as a color on the session and explained in the Session key panel below your calendar. There are four of them.
The Four Statuses
- Pending - the session is scheduled but has not occurred yet.
- Finished - the session occurred.
- Unknown - the session was scheduled, but has no linked assessment or activity data.
- Canceled - the session did not occur.
Unknown Is the One That Needs You
Pending, Finished, and Canceled are all records of something settled. Unknown is a question.
A session goes Unknown when its time has passed and Spark can’t find any assessment or activity data attached to it. That usually means one of two things: the session happened but students worked off-platform, or it didn’t happen at all. Spark can’t tell which, so it asks you.
Unknown sessions are worth clearing promptly, because a schedule full of them makes your reports less useful. See Confirming Whether a Session Happened.

How a Session Becomes Finished
Two ways. Ending a session from inside it marks it Finished automatically, which is the normal path. See Ending a Session and Submitting It. Or you confirm an Unknown session did happen, which does the same thing after the fact.
Where You’ll See Statuses
The Session key panel appears below your calendar on both the Dashboard’s day view and the Schedule page. Sessions themselves are color-coded to match, so once you know the key you can read your week at a glance without opening anything.
