Importing Students Via CSV

When you have more than a handful of students to get into the platform, Bulk Import takes a CSV and does it in one go. Students in the file are added to your school and assigned to you, so they land in your My Students table without anyone else having to do it.

This is the one way an Instructor adds students without going through a System Manager. See How Students Get Assigned to Me for everything else.

Before You Start

  • You need to be assigned to at least one school and one Program.
  • Download the sample CSV from inside the import form and build your file from it. The sample is the reference for which columns are required, and it’s kept current there rather than here.

How to Import

  1. Open My Students. Click Students in the left navigation.

  2. Click Bulk Import. It sits at the top of the roster. The form that opens is titled Bulk Import Students.

  3. Choose a Program. The form asks you to select a Program to associate with the groups you’re uploading. You can’t upload until you’ve picked one.

  4. Download the sample CSV. The form links to it. Match your file to its columns.

  5. Click Upload & Import and pick your file. The upload starts as soon as you choose the file, so there’s no separate submit step.

What Happens After You Import

A results screen titled Bulk Import Results tells you what landed. At the top it counts how many users were created, and adds counts for modified or unaltered users when there are any. Below that, a table lists each user by Email and Type. Hover a row’s icon to see whether that person was Created, Modified, or Unaltered.

New students are created and added to your school. Students who already existed but weren’t at your school are added to it. Either way, they’re assigned to you and appear in your My Students table. See Reading the My Students Table.

Common Issues

The Import Failed

If something’s wrong, the form stays open and lists the problems rather than importing a partial roster. Problems come in two kinds: ones about the file as a whole, and ones about a specific record. Fix what it names and upload again.

It Imported but Flagged Warnings

Warnings mean rows that went in with something worth a second look. The header tells you how many there were, individual rows carry a warning icon you can hover, and anything that doesn’t belong to a row appears under Additional Warnings below the table. Read them before assuming the roster is complete.
